What to Buy

What do you mean I need power.

Unfortunately your most DCC systems do NOT contain their own 110 volt AC power supply.  (The box you plug into your wall).  You have several choices on how you can power your new DCC system:

  1. You can use your existing power pack that you were using to operate your railroad before you decided to convert to DCC.
  2. Purchase a Digitrax PS-515 power supply, this unit is designed for most DCC systems not just Digitrax.
  3. Purchase a commercial power supply from your neighborhood Radio Shack®.
  4. Build your own power supply.

How much power do I need?

The power supply for your DCC system can be either 12 to 16 volts A.C. or 12 to 16 volts D.C., the power regulation is accomplished in the DCC power  booster.  The Amperage supplied should be no less then 3 amps, best operating results can be received from 5 amps +.

Digitrax produces two different power sizes for there Command Station/Power Boosters.   Generally most Starter Sets include the 5.5 amp Command Station/Power Boosters (DCS-100 and DB-150).  An 8 amp version is also available, these are generally used for S, O and G-Scales (DCS-200 and DB-200).

This depends on what scale you model in, on the left select Loco #s and you will find a table with some general guidelines of how many locomotives you will be able to operate with your Digitrax Starter Set.

8 to 10 Amp Power Supplies.

For large scale operation where an 8 to 10 amp power booster is required power supplies can be quite expensive.  The Digitrax PS2012 power supply has enough power to supply 2 booster that are rated at 8 to 10 amps.  This is a 20 amp power supply.
